"Bang" by Broadside Music Video BTS
This music video with Broadside was super fun, it gave us a lot of room to experiment. The concept of this particular scene of the video consists of the band members dressed up as Elvis impersonators. We used some pretty heavy lens filtration to give us the type of image quality that you would have seen while watching TV during the Elvis era.
The lighting was also inspired by that era - specifically the Ed Sullivan show. The lighting was always hard stage lighting with no softening or diffusion. Stage lighting is traditionally hard and since we were wanting to create something that mimicked the era in time, we stuck to it (not to mention that lights were never diffused until decades later). The iconic curtain backdrops and oversized marquee letters were also staples of that time.
Dialing in settings to minimize motion blur and shooting mostly on a tripod also helped sell the feel of a 1950’s broadcast camera. But of course we also had to get a few takes with the Steadicam (even though it wasn’t invented until 1975) to give it a little bit of modern cinematic energy and interest.
